Total is France’s largest corporation, and one of the largest oil and gas producer in the world, operating in more than 130 countries.
The business is divided into upstream (oil and gas exploration and production), downstream, (refining, marketing and shipping) and chemicals (petrochemical, fertilizers).
It was founded after World War I. Ernest Merceir, a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique expert in the electrical engineering, support by banks and companies to found Total in March 28, 1924 as the Compagnie francaise des petroles (CFP).
The company as renamed Total CFP. In 1991 the company name became simply Total. After Total takeover Petrofina in 1999, it became known as Total Fina.
It was later renamed back to Total in May 2003 after acquired Elf Aquitaine at the end of 1999.
Total has a network of nearly 17,000 service stations under the Total and Elf brand names.
June this year Total is discussing with Saudi Aramco to build petrochemicals plant alongside a joint refinery project that they are developing at Jubail. The project known as Satorp, is expected to start operation in mid 2013.
