History of AXA


AXA is a France based financial holding company that specializes in financial protection, insurance and asset management products and services.

AXA traced its origin to the mutual Mutuelle de I’Assurance Contre I’Incendie which was founded in Paris in 1816.

Operations began 1817 under the name Ancienne Mutuelle, offering fire protection fire for its members.

In 1881 France’s first mutual life-insurer, Mutuelle Vie, was founded. In 1946 these two companies were merged by Sahut d’Izarn, then general manager of Compagnie d’Assurances, to create Groupe Ancienne Mutuelle.

In 1985, AXA became the corporate name of the group of French regional insurance companies acquired by Ancienne Mutuelle.

In 1988, AXA was listed on the Paris Stock Exchange and in 1996 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The head office of AXA is located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.
