Exxon Corporation was first incorporated in 1882 as the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, succeeding the business founded by Jon D. Rockefeller. In 1888 it began to internationalized its downstream assets, and in the 1920s, it invented heavily to become a fully integrated oil company.
Standard Oil Company of New York and Standard Oil Company of New Jersey broke apart from the monopoly of Standard Oil Company in 1911.
Standard Oil Company of New Jersey became Exxon and Standard Oil Company of New York became Mobil. The company changed its name and principal trademark in the United States to Exxon. in 1972.

In 1990 Exxon moved its corporate headquarters from New York City to Irving, Texas. Late in 1998, Exxon and Mobil Corporation agreed to a record $75.3 billion merger that changed the oil industry.
