History of Disneyland

Walter Elias Disney, born December 5, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois, commonly known as Walt, came to worldwide fame in the 1930s. Initially, through his cartoons featuring his most famous creation, Mickey Mouse, who got introduced to the world by 1928’s Steamboat Willie and was drawn by Ub Iwerks.

Since its founding in 1923, The Walt Disney Company had striven to remain faithful in its commitment to ‘producing unparalleled entertainment experiences based on its rich legacy of quality creative content and exceptional storytelling’.

Disneyland Park, originally Disneyland, is the first of two theme parks built at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. It is the only theme park designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney.

The concept for Disneyland began when Walt Disney was visiting Griffith Parkin Los Angeles with his daughters Diane and Sharon. As he watched his girls ride the merry-go-round from a park bench, he dreamed of creating a place that families could enjoy together; where children could play and parents could relax.

He took research trips to Coney Island and smaller, local amusement parks in and around Los Angeles, but was left most impressed with Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, that he visited in 1951.

He initially envisioned building a tourist attraction adjacent to his studios in Burbank to entertain fans who wished to visit; however, he soon realized that the proposed site was too small. After hiring a consultant to help determine an appropriate site for his project, Walt bought a 160-acre site near Anaheim in 1953. Construction began in 1954.

Originally named “The Mickey Mouse Park,” and then in 1952, the proposed project had been called Disneylandia, but Disney followed ABC's advice and changed it to Disneyland two years later.

On July 18, 1955: Disneyland is opened to the public the original admission price was one dollar. The cost of rides was 10 cents to 35 cents.
