History of Bush Boake Allen

In 1856 Arthur Albright took his friend, J E Wilson to become his partner and in 1896m Albright & Wilson set up Oldbury Electrochemical Company, to produce phosphorus and its derivatives.

Later American group Tenneco which seventy years later became sole owner of Albright and Wilson. It had bought Marchon Products in 1955, Boake Roberts in 1960, W J Bush & Co Ltd in 1961 and as Stafford Allen in 1964.

A Boake & Co, was established by Arthur Boake in 1869 at Stratford, Newham to manufacture chemicals for use in the brewing and wine industries.

Bush Boake Allen Ltd was incorporated as a limited liability company in 1966, following the merger of Stanford Allen & Son Ltd, a drug milling and grinding company, W J Bush and Co Ltd, a producer of industrial chemicals.

Bush Boake Allen then became one of the world’s major producers of flavors and fragrances. It was acquired by Union Camp Corporation Inc, New Jersey, USA, in 1982, and was still trading in 1999 as a manufacturer of essences, fragrances and flavoring, some for use in the pharmaceutical industry.

In September 2000, International Flavor and Fragrances(IFF) announces that it was buying Bush Boake Allen.

IFF paid $48.50 per share in an all cash deal value at $970 million. International Flavors & Fragrances, founded in 1909, is the leading maker of products used by other manufacturers to enhance the aromas and tastes of consumer products.

With the purchased, IFF became the world’s leading flavors company.
