Hyatt Hotel Corporation

The founder of the Hyatt Hotels, Abram N. Pritzker was born in Chicago in 1896 (died in 1986). The son of a brilliant Chicago businessman and the brother of a child prodigy.

Hyatt Hotel Corporation, founded in 1957, is one of the leading hotel companies in the United States. Hyatt Corporation opened its first hotel on September 27, 1957.

The hotel was at Los Angeles International Airport, under the name Hyatt House. The hotel actually motel was purchased by Pritzker from a man by the name Hyatt Van Damme. He liked the name Hyatt, so he named the newly-acquired hotel after the seller.

By the late 1960s, Hyatt had become recognized for distinctive architecture, as exemplified by innovative vaulted atriums and glass elevators. By that time there were 13 Hyatt hotels in the United States.

Hyatt pioneered many concepts that are now industry standards. Hyatt Regency Atlanta, the world’s first contemporary atrium hotel, revolutionized the lodging industry when it opened in 1967. Hyatt also was the first chain to introduced the VIP/concierge floor concept, which Hyatt calls Regency Club.

Hyatt entered the riverboat gaming industry in 1994 when it opened the rand Victoria Casino in Elgin, Illinois.
