Nivea, the first mass-market skin care product, was invented in Hamburg in 1911. It was owned by German company Beiersdorf which was established in Hamburg, Germany in 1882. Later in 1890 the company was takeover by new owner pharmacist and businessman Oskar Troplowitz.
Before Nivea’s arrival, skin cream was an upper class luxury used by the privileged few. The result of over 20 years of scientific research, Nivea was the first oil and water based cream.
In 1900 emulsifying agent of Eucerit was patented and it is the basis for Eucerin and later on for Nivea Crème.
In 1911 Oskar Troplowitz invented a chemical formula and Nivea was born.
The distinctive blue and white Nivea tin started its story in 1925. It was relaunched with what became its classic blue tin and the white Nivea logo.
Less expensive than competitor creams, Nivea’s sales rose during the 1930s.
By the 1970s Nivea had a claim to be amongst the world’s largest brands of all-purpose skin creams.
Today, Nivea is the largest skin and beauty care brand in the world, and is available in over 200 countries.
