In 1848, Charles Mason and Joseph Ward joined together and founded the Michigan Woolen Mill. In 1849 Ward bought full ownership which he operated until 1860.
In 1861, he converted the woolen mill to flour production. In 1882, Ward’s son Frank (1860-1936) and E.C. Hinman (1852) took over the business.
Hinman left the business in 1888, and Frank Ward moved to Detroit in 1887, Joseph resumed control of the business until his death.
