David Buick, a plumbing parts producer has started the company bearing his name, but was unable to make it profitable. In 1903, he built his first car in Detroit.
On the strength of the car designed by David Buick, he raised $1.5 million of investment, David Buick, the Scots-born inventor left the company prematurely in 1906, dying poor man.
In 1903, James Whiting, manager of the Flint Wagon Works moved David Buick’s small Buick Motor Company from Detroit to Flint. The first Flint Buicks were made the following year, but soon face bankruptcy.
Whiting arranged for William C. Durant to take over the company in the fall of 1904, from that point the company prospered. Buck survived an economic crisis in 1907 which bankrupted many other small car companies.
In 1908 he brought together several automotive manufacturers to form the General Motors.
